The better manner to admire and sense immediately the magic town uncovered atmosphere from San Marco Field… is entering by San Marco Place. In front, the islands crown surrounding Venetia and the magnificent sight of the Canal Grande passing the gondolas, the pride of the noble palaces and the impressive churches that seem rise from water. Contrasting with the Byzantine lines of the precious San Marco Basilica, on the opposite side, we can note the San Giorgio Maggiore , with Neoclassic style, spacious cupola and the perfect balance of the kittledrum. At right side of San Giorgio Maggiore island, the land edge is extended verse the south part of Giudecca island, while the second quite visible church at right side, a mole in impressive white marble Chiesa della Salute , that it rises on the Dorsauro extreme point. Turning here, at left side, the green gardens of the Biennale, the extreme fish point, such the town shape is considered, floating: there you can see the Lido di Venezia. All coastal area, from small patch of land increases the town glamour. Going into the place we see two columns of the winged lion, symbol of the Serenissima, and San Teodoro. We can admire the Ducal Palace, power and riches of the Republic symbol, its facade, of white stone alternates with red marble of Verona, imperial color. On the left side, the San Marco Campanile, 100 m high. We are arrived to the San Marco Basilica , gold and mosaic sparkling, with many battlements and pinnacles, typical from Orient Byzantine influence, synthesis of the cultural osmosis of Venice, bridge between West and East, boundary town, that in the centuries has molded its own identity.
Light reflects have a suggestive effect over whole place, remembering the Procuratie Vecchie and Nuove, and Napoleon era. Looking the whole buildings crown you have a special involving perception. At the place, many Venetia historic locations, many of them with very interesting colors facing the place, like the Florian Coffee Shop, loved by Gasparo Gozzi, Gazzetta Veneta creator, the Quadri Coffee Shop whose interior is exquisite reflect of XVIII century, and this is the loved place of Luchino Visconti and Thomas Mann; or the Lavena, loved by Richard Wagner. On every location, a orchestra offering delicious music, national or foreign, but always-magic music, delighting tourists, travelers and Bel Paese lovers. The Procuratie, building at place, is the seat of several famous Venetia museums. There will be interesting to visit the Correr Napoleonic Area, with many remembrances from glorious times of the Serenissima and Canova sculptures. You have to visit the Archeological Museum and the Marciana Bookshop, admiring the impressive antiques show, town treasury gifted by celebrities of antiques art. We can reach the Piazzetta dei Leoncini, at San Marco Basilica side. At left hand, the Orologio Tower with enormous quadrant with Zodiac signs, moon phases and Sun movement. Then, from this place you can go to San Giovanni XXIII Place, with two Verona marble lions, and a central fountain. From the XVII century, there is the reception room for the entertainments organized from the doge, the square was connected to the Ducal Palace by a hanging hall. At left side, the Venini, renowned glass art business, while a little far away you can admire the Largo Micheli, renowned homemade delicatessen shop.
Searching an exclusive place you can find Al Giglio, Santa Maria del Giglio. If you spend one day in Venice, even if you don’t like risk gamble, you would enjoy the Casino, with its unusual and electrifying atmosphere.
From San Marco Place you can arrive to the Orologio Tower, exiting by Mercerie street. The, turn in Fiubera street and after Fabbri street, you find the Bovolo field, where you can admire a typical Venetia building, the Scala del Bovolo, an original cylinder open tower, with interior columns, with spiral staircase. Turning on Fabbri street, at number 1035 you find a historic bakery, Marchini, where you can taste the sweet Venetian biscuit, homemade product. Going to Rialto Bridge you can find a blind alley, with a little square where you see the Goldoni Theater, prose theater dedicated to the famous Venetian comedy author. After Manin field, you can find the Fantin field, where you remember the terrific mass of flames of 1996 La Fenice Theater, whose main facade ruins are there. This theater, now under reconstruction, was very important for Venetia city, because its acoustic conditions are excellent, and was the reason for its worldwide fame. Going to the large street XXII Marzo, you find multiple businesses; and at its end, you see the open field San Moisé, with homonymous church, with Baroque facade. At left field side, it is the Ma.Re. business, Glass Art Gallery, with objects from famous designers. Turning right, the next point to visit would be the Santa Maria del Giglio Church whose facade is at the homonymous place. From XVII century, this building is an relevant example of Venetian Baroque; inside it, you can admire the Venetian single canvas from Pieter Paul Rubens, Flamingo artist: la Madonna col Bambino e San Giovannino. Little far away, the Santo Stefano field and church, where you can admire the famous Tintoretto work: l’Ultima Cena e la Lavanda dei Piedi e Cristo nell’Orto. Going to the Botteghe street, you find the original antiques shop Antiquus, with ancient frames, silver and jewelry
Going to Academia Bridge, you can find San Marco and Dorsoduro. From here you can admire the beautiful view of Canal Grande in the San Marco field, or the Salute Church. Crossing the bridge, you find the Accademia Gallery, with the same name for the wood bridge. Visit the Gallery, where you can admire the most complete show of paintings representing Venetian art from XIV – XVIII centuries, and works from Paolo Veneziano: L¿incoronazione della Vergine; and from Tiziano, La Pietà and La presentazione della Vergine al tempio. Going by Terà Foscarini river, and the Zattere, foundation where were docked the goods transporting rafts. From here you can see the Giudecca island facing the wide homonym canal. Going a little far away, the impressive church Santa Maria della Salute, and going to west bound, the San Sebastiano church, from XV century, with an extraordinary painting show of Paolo Veronese, more of them preserved until today, and some works from Tiziano and Tintoretto. Crossing street, after San Barnaba, you arrive to Ca’ Rezzonico, which since 1936 is the seat of the XVII Century Venetian Museum. You can visit the elegant dancing room, with the first piano with a big scale; and you can admire the splendid typical era decoration, lights of Murano glass, and the Arazzi Room. Near, the San Rocco field, and in Tintoretto street, the Scuola di San Rocco, which like other high Venetian schools, is a youth art-training center. Going to Frari field, you can find the splendorous Frari Church, splendid example of Gothic Venetian architecture. Enter to admire Tiziano’s works: la Pala dell’Assunta and la Pala Pesaro.
From San Polo, with the little street and bridge, one of the most famous Venetian restaurants: Le antiche carampane, to taste inexcusably its excellent fish. After supper, you can decide to walk by Lido di Venezia admiring the suggestive panoramic view of San Marco area, with thousands of lights.
From San Polo field, the second open space is San Marco Place, with ancient XV century palaces, in Gothic Venetian style. Going to Salizada San Polo at left hand you can admire the Campanile del Trecento, whose base has two lions; and at right hand, the San Polo Church, where you can see the preserved splendid cycle of the Via Crucis di Tiepolo. Near, a prestigious fabric laboratory: Cenerentola, ideal place to acquire antiques. Going to the San Polo Bridge, the Saoneri dei Noboli street, visit the Goldoni’s House, with elegant facade and recently restored cortile, seat of the museum of works from Venetian comedy author. A little far you find the wine bar Al Bacco Felice, with excellent ambience, to taste the best wines and tidbits. Crossing the little streets of the town, crossing numerous canals and bridges, is like going into and tortuous labyrinth, finding always the same thing, ending point is like initial point, since the buildings architecture is so homogeneous. But always you can find an open field, with majestic churches, and, suddenly you are arriving directly to the magnificent Canal Grande. According to its beautiful, it can be considered a main water street Rialto Bridge, the most famous of this Canal. Going to Ravano you will be near from Rialto market, with the Pescheria, elegant Gothic style imitation gate, where are sailing the Canal Grande, and the Erbaria. A live area of town, center of commercial activity on past time, today preferred by tourists, like in Ruga degli Orefici, with numerous stalls and jewel shops. At left hand, the little San Giacomo di Rialto field, with the homonymous church and the characteristic sundial on the main facade.
To perceive the complete Rialto Bridge magnificence you have to sail to Canal Grande, in a steamer ship or a romantic gondola. Little far away from canal curve, you would see the Fabbriche Nuove, with its elegant structure, and at right side, the Camerlenghi Palace, and the Santa Lucia Station. The best observation place in this little open space is just in front of this palace, which is a white stone building, former seat of magistrates in charge of state finances issues. Crossing the bridge and going to the top, you can see the most evocative and typical Venetian panoramas: the large water course running, the magnificent and refined palaces, and the line of waved movement gondolas crossing… the most typical and suggestive Venetian panorama. Turning right go to Mocenigo Palace, ancient Patrician residence, seat of the Museo del Tessuto e del Costume, and Ca’ Pesaro, sumptuous Baroque Venetian residence, and the seat of the Modern Art Museum. Crossing Canal Grande you can admire, at opposite riverside, the Ca’ D’Oro elegant shape, in Venetian Gothic flowered style, preserving the relevant art work San Sebastiano di Mantenga. Crossing the Salizada di San Stae you find the San Stae Church with XVII century facade and front to the Canal Grande. Other important church there is San Giacomo all’Orio Church, one of the most Venetian ancient churches, from IX century, reconstructed in XIII century. You might visit this church, since it has a new sacristy, a splendid gallery with decorations from Paolo Veronese. Going to the Station, you find the San Simone Church with wide cupola and central kettledrum evoking the Pantheon shape, and the Scalzi Bridge.
Go to downtown in stream ship, dinning in Antico Martini, one of the most romantic Venetian restaurant, with typical dishes from the local wine-gastronomic traditions. After the dinner, would be interesting go to Riva degli Schiavoni, where you can admire some elegant town points, specially the Sospiri Bridge where you will enjoy the spectacular Lagoon panorama.
